AMFA
the Future of Our Profession
AMFA2000 pdf

Through the past thirty years there has been one union fighting
for democracy and the rights of the Mechanics and related class
and craft, that union has been AMFA. AMFA has always believed
in membership involvement and open contract negotiations. AMFA's
success with open negotiations has been proven once again with
the NWA/AMFA contract. The IAM and other industrial unions have
not and will not be able to match the contract and the language
provided to the NWA AMFA membership.
The United Airlines mechanics and related have fought for the
last three years to bring AMFA representation to the membership
here at UAL. We seek to establish a truly democratic and professional
union for our members much like that of ALPA. We believe in
being represented by legal counsel during our grievance procedure
and in our contract negotiations. The millions of dollars we
provide to our union should be used to represent and protect
our membership; no other union in our industry provides more
legal protection and representation than AMFA.
When we win representation at UAL we will establish at least
six new locals for our members in addition to the nine locals
already established under AMFA. New AMFA locals will be established
in San Francisco, Denver, Chicago, Indianapolis, Washington
Dulles, Los Angeles and other stations yet to be determined.
Theses locals will be dedicated to serving their membership,
the mechanics and related at UAL and the other airlines that
will soon join AMFA.
In AMFA the locals are the strength of the union, there are
no district offices in AMFA. The local membership handles all
issues concerning their members' grievances and contractual
issues. This local autonomy provides greater member control
of the union; it results in better representation during disputes
involving our members and their contract. Local autonomy puts
the power into your hands.
With the addition of United mechanics and related to AMFA, we
will see AMFA grow from the 11,000 members represented at Northwest,
Alaska, Mesaba and Atlantic Coast Airlines, to 27,000 with the
addition of United Airlines. Other professionals in our industry
are also seeking AMFA representation American Airlines, Delta
Airlines and American Trans Air are just a few that are working
towards better representation with AMFA. Our profession will
be represented by AMFA completely; there is no doubt about that.
AMFA has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that the true power
of a union lies in democracy, and professionalism. This union
with 11,000 members has brought back respect to our profession.
They have provided an industry-leading contract with excellent
language and benefits that the industrial unions with hundreds
of thousands of members have failed to achieve over the last
20 years.
Dedication and persistence are the keys to success. We must
continue our fight for freedom and democracy. We would like
to thank every one of you who have given your time and support
to our cause. We are investing in our future with our actions
today; we are making the change
